Le Gourmand du Maubert

Le Gourmand du Maubert is located on the Left Bank of the river Seine, on the edge of the Latin Quarter in the 5th arrondissement.  Within a five minute walk of the apartment are many of the best, most interesting attractions of the city.

Notre Dame Cathedral is just along the river, as well as another jewel of medieval architecture, the exquisite Sainte Chapelle.  On the way, spend time strolling along the Quais exploring the treasures of the famous Bouquinistes.  The charm of the Île St Louis is directly across the river from the apartment.  Keep walking and you will be in the Marais district on the Right Bank in less than 10 minutes.  We recommend a lazy weekend afternoon strolling around the beautiful Place des Vosges, and indulging in a little retail therapy after a leisurely lunch.  In the opposite direction from Notre Dame, along Quai de Tournelle, the outstanding Institut du Monde Arabe is a just a block down the river.  The views from its excellent roof top café provide an interesting and different perspective of the city.  If you are lucky, take in one of their very interesting special exhibitions.

Just a few minutes’ walk away is one of the great must-see sights of the city.  The impressive Pantheon, with its enormous gilded stone dome, is the final resting place of such French luminaries as Marie and Pierre Curie, Voltaire, Émile Zola and Victor Hugo amongst many others.  On the way, turn left on Bvd Saint Germain onto rue de Poissy and admire the recently restored College of Bernadins, a huge 13th century building now used as a conference centre.  Take a look inside, the pointed arches are an architectural marvel.

You will also want to explore the area around the historic rue Mouffetard and Place de la Contrascarpe, passing by no. 74 rue du Cardinal Lemoine where the young Hemingway lived, and where James Joyce worked on the final draft of Ulysees at no. 71.

For a change of pace, both the Jardin des Plantes and Jardin de Luxembourg are the perfect places to relax, while just a little further away are all the shopping delights of St Germain des Pres—although how long this takes depends how often you stop to window shop and admire all the interesting sights along the way.  You may decide to detour into the Musée de Cluny to see the remains of the Roman baths or explore the wonderful collection of medieval art and artefacts, such as the exquisite Lady and the Unicorn tapestries.

Along Boulevard St Germain you will find a number of useful businesses, such as a pharmacy and supermarkets for your daily needs, as well as luxuries such as the heavenly Dyptique.

We hope you have an enjoyable stay in the apartment and in the City of Light
